Storytelling

I suppose my blogs need a theme. So I start with this. One key element of journalism that I believe to be left adrift in the fast-pace, horse race reporting-esque, competitive news world of today is storytelling. Journalists should be tellers of stories foundationally before adhering to the multitude of services to the public required of them. The nature of the news today is to focus on the prominent people in society, the people who have the power to manipulate their presence and reputation. The nature of the news today is centered on the negative, though unquestionably important, events throughout our world. The nature of the news today is to jump from story to story, without allocating time and investigation toward the effects of those events...

The nature of the news today needs the small voices. It needs the stories from the people who make this world vast, unique, beautiful, and continuously revolving. It needs stories that hold on to the universal themes of love and struggle.

Throughout my blog plosts this semester, I hope to be telling a story within each one. Have you ever started randomly chatting with someone and discovered an interest in their life story? Whether it is quaint and admirable, filled with struggle, defined by success or trial (think Forrest Gump)… I plan on telling the stories of people I run into throughout my weeks. Now, I have no idea where this will go. But I think the pursuit of voices, of shared experiences perhaps, will be rewarding. I also think it will be personally beneficial to me, as I meet wonderful people or better understand a friend.

I think it is important to include the video that gave me the inspiration for the theme of this blog:

"And I ask them the same two questions I will ask you. Is it possible to be happy with this life? Did you enjoy your story?"
